Improvised 'Bug Out Bag' (BoB)

Sun May 20 2007
Many people feel a small bag that be kept near you is a better option for the prepared person a than a larger (more equipped) bag that's kept out of reach. With this concept in mind the Bob or Bug out Bag is a small bag with just essential items which can be used to get a person home or to a safe place

This BoB was made out of a modified Chinese chest rig  and some kind of  European military pouch. I included a  few items that might be handy for getting out  of just about any kind of trouble

Here are some photos of the  BoB

The Chinese AK47 magazine chest rig was slightly modified by cutting down the magazine pouches to allow easier access to the magazines the pouch was only slightly modified by removing the metal belt clips

The modified chest rig will work with both AR magazines and AK magazines. Also use some of the smaller pouches for a Surefire Spares Carrier, smoke grenades, and some Glock 23 magazines

The straps were undone from the typical rigging and threaded through the belt loops on the pouch see pictures for how the straps weave through and support the new BoB

A knot is tied in the straps to create a shoulder strap. Simply re-tie the straps to adjust length of strap. After this picture I retied the knot to be off center so it wouldn't ride right on my shoulder

The knife sticks straight out of the bag for easy access. Worn with the pouch outside (away from body) the BoB doesn't look too much like a military bag

Inside the pouch are gloves (needed for the AK) a fobus with two Glock mags, another fobus with a G22 that can be drawn from the pouch when worn, or moved to the belt. Under the mags is my first aid kit which can also be left in the bag or worn on the belt. Completing the kit is a Surefire G2 and a pair of Lineman's Pliers

I planned to run an AK47 with this bag, so  I thought about how to carry the rifle. I came up with this  option

The same bag, but with a wrapped AK attached to the strap with Alta knee pads. The stock of the AK is placed in t he fold of the magazine chest rig, and stays in place very well. The wrapped gun is not totally obvious to a casual observer.   I planned to run an AK47 with this bag, so I thought about how to carry the rifle. I wrapped the AK with it's stock folded in a rag along with a mag. It's not terribly fast to get to, but it protects the rifle and pads it while being carried. Once it's unwrapped you have the rag to use, and don't need to carry an empty rifle case..In a hot area, the rifle could be stored loaded and fired with the rag still wrapped around it if needed

Once wrapped up I thought about using bungee cords to hold it to the strap, but what the heck to do with bungee cords in a fight?? So I stumbled across my Alta knee pads and the idea struck, so I used them to attach the rifle. they help hide what's in the wrap and offer some additional protection from the rifle while carrying it

Would you like the small pictures to get larger?
Let us know, use the feedback form to request larger pictures.

It's a lot more work to load all the large pictures.
We are happy to do it if they are requested, but if not we leave them small to save time

i like the idea. not everyone has access to a good assault backpack or it equivelent. i use a tactical vest with attached molle bags on a drop leg platform and on the belt. great info. the wraping of the gun was very informative. since i live in southern arizona. thanks for the info
